Awenda Provinical Park May 22, 2012

What a gorgeous long weekend we had.

Look at how pretty it was at Awenda Provincial Park. We drove up just for the day and all the Trillium flowers where still in full bloom. This flower is the official flower of the Canadian Province of Ontario.

The water was still pretty cold but we still went for a swim…nice and refreshing.  And the water snake though she had to show how she could swim in the crystal clear water.

Fall Colours At Scanlon Creek Conservation Area October 11, 2011

Gorgeous Thanksgiving weekend

A walk by  Scanlon Creek Conservation Area …just amazing how warm the weather was.  The girls had as much fun as my husband and I had taking a stroll though the amazing colours.

I was on the look out for some nice pictures of mushrooms…well see for yourself what I have found…..

Rock Island Shawl July 17, 2011

What a soft flowing shawl in the summer breeze blowing…..Rock Island Shawl by Jared Flood is so stunning, fun and  interesting to knit.
Yes I know I did use another yarn the original pattern is asking for.  I even ended up using two different kinds of yarn.  First I started to knit with a wonderful soft yarn called Madelinetosh tosh fine sock yarn in a soft light pale pink.
For the last chart pattern I incorporated the second skein called Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino (KPPPM)  every other row I switched up the yarn.  All knit with needle size 4mm and one skein of each yarn.

This shawl is on its way now for a very special girlfriend in Switzerland for her 50th Birthday. I hope she will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed knitting it for her.

Happy Birthday Marianne….hope you had a wonderful day with all your family and friends.

My Home, My Country, My Mountains…..I love so much.

Wow I am always in aw to see this breath-taking view

I am speechless, my eyes get all watery

If I see this form up so high in the sky

It means

I will not see my Swiss-Home ,my Country, my Mountains for some time again..

So untill next time I will dream about you….

and keep you close to my heart

Stein in Switzerland / Bad-Säckingen in Germany April 20, 2011

Another fun day in Switzerland…well also Germany.  On a sunny warm day my mom, my daughter and I drove to “Stein Säckingen” only 20 minutes from Möhlin.  Stein is a municipality in the district of Frick in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland.   http://www.gemeinde-stein.ch/de/portrait/geschichtestein/

The Village “Stein” in Switzerland lies across the Rhein River from  “Bad-Säckingen”  in  Germany, state of  Baden-Württemberg.   Two bridges link the two city, one vehicular (Fridolinsbrücke) and the other, the Holzbrücke pedestrian bridge.

Very pictures and I find it fantastic to be able to still have these old bridges in place.  But in Europe  this is not as rare to see.  Things have been different and perhaps we can call this old bridge a luxury to be able to still have to show our children and walk the walk across the Rhein River…

Memories Of My Visit Home April 11, 2011

“Möhlin das Dorf der Drei Kirchen”

“ Möhlin the Village of the three Churches”

is  a small town 27 years ago it had 6,000 people.  But since this year it is a city with 10,ooo people living there in the Kanton Aargau in Switzerland. We had visited  my hometown only last month in March and had taken a view pictures. Playground, the Town, Water fountains, and the farmlands…

Here at the  ”Storchen- und Pflegestation” in Möhlin, many  birds species  are at home and taken care off if found  in the wild. Some of them come here hurt, broken wings etc. or from owners that just could not keep them at their home any longer for several reasons. This place is also a breeding place for so many free flying Storchs that have had their nest  hear for so many years…

Pinwheel Sweater – Jacket April 7, 2011

What a fun jacket for anyone to wear.  This can be knit for any size jacket…. but this one I knit for a 4 to 5-year-old girl. Though she is still a little younger than that…..  She looks just so sweet in this red wig and the fun sweater swinging around her when she danced around.

The pattern is from Ravelry to download for free too called “Pinwheel Sweater” (Child) by Shelley Mackie from Elann.com.  For this sweater I used up my “Cascade Yarns 220 Wool” that I had left from a previous baby blanket project.  So I just kind of played around with whatever yarn amount and colour I had available to me…knit with needles size US 9 – 5.5 mm it was finished very quickly.

Kayla Jacket For The Birthday Girl Leonie April 7, 2011

Today is you’re Birthday Leonie

We wish you a wonderful day.

I hope the Jacket fits you just perfect as it is knit just for   “YOU”

So simple and easy to knit….”  Kayla Shrug by Americo Original” one more time.  But this time it is for a 5 to 7 year old girl.  Unfortunately I do not know what yarn this is other than some blends of cotton and….??? Knit with needle size 3.5mm and about 2.5 skeins of yarn.  This one had to be finished in one week…time when fast and finished it was…but that meant time for us to go on the plane and fly back home to Canada.

Love the way the colours play together and make a pattern…

Spring Flowers in Switzerland March 25, 2011

Well I do feel the spring but this was on my visit back home the first two weeks in March.  So nice and sunny, we had as always a great and unforgettable time back home.  At my home where I grew up…the grass if full of the flowers nothing like that you will see here in our neighborhood…just grass.  There it is grass with flowers growing in the grass…its fun to see.

It’s interesting… I find every year when I talk to my mom and dad during this time they are about a month ahead with the weather.  And as it was on March 23rd we had -10 degreese and 10cm snow and they had +22 degrees…wow what a difference

Centaurus Sweater January 19, 2011

A Very Simple Short-Sleeved Sweater

But a very loooong knit especially the front part. I am glad I knit the front first.Casting on a total of 417 stitches…lets knit with needle 3.5mm and 4mm.  The rest was very quick and a short knit. I did not have to wait to long to try it on. I think it is as stunning as Wendy told me and well worth the knitting….I did have to knit and extra 10 rows to get the measurements required for the front part . Used up 3 skeins and just very little of the 4th skein… A total of 50,874 stitches just for fun…

I believe this pattern and yarn is available from Americo Original in Toronto to buy. You would have to contact them and see as it is not on their website so far.

You may also talk to Wendy at Unwind Yarn House for more info on the pattern and Yarn a total of 5 skeins of   ”Merino Superwash Fine Sport” that she has in her store too.

So it is the week of the Vogue Knitting Life Show 2011 in New York City.  This “Centaurus Sweater” will be on display for you to get inspired to start  knitting it  for your self too.   Amazing and great over a nice shirt etc….

“Knitting” The Big Runway Fashion! January 14, 2011

This is an article that was in a Toronto Newspaper January 13th. 2011

I though it would be of interest to some of my knitting readers all over the world.  Her article talkes about:

” I think people want something that took time, and is perfectly imperfect.”

“Beautiful handcrafted product is appreciated in a world of mass production. It stands out and says ‘I am special.

That is my believe too…so keep on knitting and wear it proudly

Enjoy

Jacqueline

Tracy Nesdoly Special to the Star

You might not think that chunky sweater Grandma gave you for Christmas is on the cutting edge of fashion, but you’d be wrong.

The handmade, mistakes and all, is having a major moment.

No less an arbiter of style and trend thanPhoebe Philo , Céline’s creative director, made news with her spring 2011 collection by sending a handwoven coat down the runway — and “embracing the artisanal” is something that style.com’s Nicole Phelps called an unintentional rebuff to the knock-off artists who copy Céline’s sleek and minimalist look.

PHOTO GALLERY: Chic-er knits The Stella McCartney  spring offering, found at 119 Corbo in Yorkville, includes crochet bags and crochet-embellished tanks and even jeans, and British Vogue says “granny sweaters are big news again,” pointing to Miu Miu sweaters, See by Chloe and Marc by Marc Jacobs coats as evidence in a fashion spread that included some of the hottest It Girls in their best big and chunky knits.

Crediting them with having an unmatched trend-spotting record, style.com asked the founders of Opening Ceremony, the U.S. chain considered a clearing house for international cool, for their predictions for the next 10 years. Humberto Leon and Carol Lim opined that craftsmanship will be appreciated more and more, and often that means handcrafted: “We see American houses employing the kind of artisanal specialists like the ateliers of France. In the vein of Rodarte’s hand-knit sweaters we will increasingly see artisanal qualities in American fashion houses.”

Trend-devouring mass retailers including Club Monaco are getting in on the handmade revolution, offering chunky cardigans lovingly knit by human hands.

“Everything in fashion is so fast, and fashion is knocked off so quickly, that something hand done, a piece that you will savour forever, seems very special and worth the money,” says Toronto designer Rita Liefhebber, who included hand knits in her fall collection, and followed that up with loose hand-knit vests and tanks and hand-dyed dresses for spring. “The economy is such that when you look at a piece and know you can find something similar at H&M, you go that route. Fast fashion has the flip side – I think people want something that took time, and is perfectly imperfect.”

“I’m starting to see a lot of blogs and websites devoted to the handmade and authentic,” says Trish Ewanika, also a Toronto designer who carried Rita Liefhebber hand-knit mufflers in her Bathurst St. store. The scarves sold out sharpish, though they are not the only artisanal element in the Ewanika mix – she also carries hand-dyed silk scarves, Jensen-Conroy jewellery, which include necklaces made of crystals caught in hand-crocheted nets and Lars Andersson knits, each piece handmade and limited edition.

“I think people are attracted to the authenticity of the handmade,” says Ewanika. “Maybe it coincides with the recession, where the idea of investment dressing and having fewer pieces means you want the ones you do splurge on to be very special and truly unique.”

When Kim Newport-Mimran opened Seventy Seven, the Pink Tartan flagship last month, she included knitting kits in the product mix alongside her own ready-to-wear collection.

“I love the graphic element hand knits offer, and a hand knit is so special and luxe,” Newport-Mimran says. “And anyone can do it – my 9-year old has a project on the go and I think I’ll frame it!”

And she sees a broader societal trend: “Beautiful handcrafted product is appreciated in a world of mass production. It stands out and says ‘I am special.’ ” For her own collection, she says, “I’m currently looking at different techniques with fabric and construction to give the collection an element of hand made.”

For some, seeing a gorgeous handmade sweater or scarf is just the incentive needed to embark on a hobby in earnest. Knitting clubs sprung up a number of years ago when news hit that celebrities sometimes take to the needles to reduce stress and kill time on set, and now sewing clubs seem to be hitting their stride.

“I have seen so many blogs spring up about sewing where they go into minute detail about every step of the way in the projects they’ve started. These are people who have never grown up with patterns or home sewing, and the idea that you can make something yourself is fascinating to them,” says Ewanika. “My industrial-sewing repair place said they have never sold so many domestic or quasi-industrial machines.”

It seems there’s just something scrumptious about creating your very own piece. Americo Original at 456 Queen St. W. sells gorgeously coloured yarns, most of them from South America, and has created a full range of knitting patterns based on current trends. The knitting classes are routinely sold out.

“My original idea was to open a home accessories store,” says Nicole Sibonney, who opened Americo four years ago. “But when I was sourcing product in Argentina and saw the raw materials for the fabrics, I was so inspired I changed direction.”

Americo is now mostly a yarn and knitting shop for hobbyists, though there remains a smattering of the original idea in the form of cosy woven blankets and other home accents.

“Knitting allows you to be creative, and it’s meditative and therapeutic,” says Sibonney, explaining the appeal. “Knitting sort of balances our wants. You can’t make anything as fast as you can purchase it. It’s good to slow down a little.”
